Today, the typical recreational gold mining surface dredge uses a gasoline engine to power a water pump that forces a high pressure jet of water through a venture and into a short section of pipe that generates a negative pressure capable of pulling water through the pipe and thereby lifting the gold bearing sands and gravels from the stream or river bottom and delivering it to a sluice at the ...
· As dredge size/capacity increases, the sluice boxes understandably get wider. This increase in width would ensure the water speed will remain fairly much in porportion with the size of the dredge. So if most of the gold is recovered in the first couple of feet of the sluice box, as every one says, why then do sluice boxes get longer as well as wider as dredge size increases?

· In the past, gold prospectors would make their own sluice boxes. With a few boards, a little mountain moss, and a bit of ingenuity, you could still make a DIY sluice box on the cheap. Since a lightweight entrylevel sluice box can be purchased for 100 or less in many instances, many hobbyists opt for a manufactured option that can be used straight out of the box.
· So we did end up pulling that old 8" out of the bush from an old mining camp (previous post). We're going to go through the whole thing and get it back up and running. Main question I have is about sluice box design. I've read "The Clarkson Study" a few times over the years and just reread it. D...
In this way, you will be able to act from direct observation to ensure that your, or anyone else's, sluicing device will be recovering gold to the fullest extent possible. In setting up a sluice, if feasible, it is desirable to have enough water flow to move the material through the box as fast as you can shovel (or dredge ) it in at full production speed.
· Welcome to the Gold Dredging Forum. Using a metal detector and a small dredge to get as much gold as possible from small shallow streams certainly makes sense . particularly in Otago. The detector you use must, obviously, have a fully waterproof coil, and it must be an open coil so it can be submersed effortlessly.
DREDGE SUCTION NOZZLES By: Dale Russell Suction nozzles can easily be home made, with some ingenuity a few tools. No matter what size you want to make from 1" up to 6", you can purchase exhaust pipe with that outside diameter (OD) Power jets measure the same as for pipe and will be discussed later.
NB: Our Super Sluice systems DO NOT have nor need any matting, carpet or removable riffles, making cleaning up with OUR Sluice system a lot easier and faster. All gold is trapped in our sawtooth riffle system, this is only one specifiion that makes our system quite unique. (others have unsuccessfully tried to copy our Patented design.)
· It went into operation October 10, 1915, and during the two months following, it handled 142,900 yards of gravel and recovered 69,552 in gold. We append herewith a table of the operations of the Derry Ranch Gold Dredging Co. which illustrates the excellent results accomplished by this dredge.
Alot dry placers will run .o3 oz per ton and a two inch dredge pump can handle half ton of slurry and pump it to a long tom sluice box. with a tweny fie dollar jump in price of gold to 1250 per oz a lot more people will be trying to get few particles just remember it takes millions of those fourty mesh particles to make and ounce. ande under a two hundred power microscope they look like real ...

Making your own gold sluice is a good beginning project for new prospectors in my opinion. Just take a close look at the sluices being offered by the manufacturers, and you can make your own plans. On the other hand, if you are making your sluice box for a dredge, then I do recommend the two level or undercurrent type box.
Goldbearing gravel and dirt is shoveled into the hopper of the power sluice / high banker, which is mounted at the top end of the sluice box. Inside the hopper is a "grizzly" which is a series of sloping rods that filter out larger rocks.
· But these areas are limited to smallscale operations, in seabeds with limited gold deposits. Dredgers who actually wish to make their fortune with suction dredging have to dredge in one of a limited number of claims, either "staked" by other dredgers, secured by .
Dredging with Levels by Jim Witt, California I found that judging the right angle of drop on my 2" dredge sluice box was to cumbersome and I was often wrong. I often times work alone and could not take the time to watch the pitch carefully so I attached two levels on the dredge that would visually show me when the dredge was level sidetoside, and when it had the correct drop (2" for 3 foot).
The Multi Sluice ™ is a 3in1 system that converts to your needs, and unlike other equipment, won't end up on the "shelf" as you grow. Originally designed as just a "stripping" unit for final cleaning, Doc decided to make a MULTI purpose unit. Guaranteed to run at a 99% capture rate on the first run down to 100 mesh gold.
Sluicing is a method of separating and recovering gold from the placer gravel by the use of running water. Gold is caught or trapped by riffles. Riffles are purposeful obstructions which slow the movement of gold in the sluice so it can be trapped in miner's moss, carpeting, or rubber matting in the bottom of the sluice.
· A normal sluice box tilt is approximately. 3/4" inch to the running foot. Afour foot sluice box should have an approximate tilt of 3". There is no one setting that works for all dredges. You will want to run you're dredge as flat as possible while still clearing the lighter material from the riffles.

Since the majority of the available gold in the world is micro fine and ultrafine gold in the 30 micron (.0011 inch) range, you want a sluice that can collect that gold and keep it from running out the end. The Gold Well Vortex Drop Riffle Sluice works by creating a gentle, vertically oriented
